![]() Start Saving What’s the point of working if you aren’t saving any money? Imagine spending 5 years working, and all you have to show for it is an increase in your age. You might as well be unemployed because you are going nowhere fast; working and suffering for nothing. I learned this valuable lesson the hard way when my girlfriend one day said to me, “your 24 years old with no savings”. It was a very hard thing to hear, but nonetheless, a fantastic wake up call. You must start saving right away. And if you are saving, you must try to increase your savings by a bit more. How can you cut back on your expenses? One of my friends shops at a store called Aldi, which is supposed to be far cheaper than the average grocery retailer. Can you catch the bus once in a while? Or cycle to work? What about cutting back on cigaretes, alcohol, junk food, and other non essential expenses? Aim to save at least 10% of your income, if not more. I used to save 50% of my income. It wasn’t easy, but in less than 12 months, I managed to save $12,000. Not a bad start for a deposit on a house! The short term ends very quickly, then you must face the long term. Without any savings, the long term looks very bleak, and is very difficult.
